A good digital photograph is always a testimony to the photographers skill. It also shows the artful taste of the photographer and creative usage of the equipment to create a magnificent and appealing photograph. To take a good photograph, a digital photographer must combine the skill sets used by the previous generation of film camera enthusiasts and professionals, and the power of digital circuitry and sensors on a digital camera. The photography itself is not a hard chore if a few relevant basics are built up as a solid foundation, and the photographer experiments with objects, the equipment and post production.

Most of the basic foundation skills are elaborated here as:-

  • Aperture control: The aperture controls the amount of light entering the camera. Low f-numbers indicate a larger aperture hole (like f/2.8) while higher numbers indicate a smaller aperture hole (like f/22). Stepwise increment of the aperture culls the amount of light entering by one half.
  • Exposure control: The exposure of the sensor to the object dictates the time for which the aperture is opened. Lower exposure times mean a shorter duration of aperture opening, i.e. a smaller amount of light enters the camera, while larger values indicate a higher exposure to the object for low light conditions.
  • Flash usage: Usage of the high intensity flash light must be controlled. The flash is useless in high light conditions, or for taking pictures of a dark landscape as the range and power of normal flashlights cannot accommodate the distance of the landscape and return light to the sensor.
  • Handling: The camera should be handled with safety. It should not be dropped as that may permanently damage the sensors or some other important working parts. While taking a picture the camera should be held steadily for the best photographs. For long distance photography with heavy cameras, the usage of tripods is highly recommended as these produce the best digital photographs while freeing the photographer’s hands to tinker around with the other values.
  • Camera knowledge: The good digital photographer always knows his or her way around the camera. The professionals always get to know their equipment very well, including their smallest nuances before they use them for mainstream work. Each and every feature of the camera or accessory must be known so as to ease extra work.

These are just a few tips to get the best out of any camera. Each camera has its own sets of features and handling, and so more in depth articles may be found for different cameras on the internet.
